Review: Firelight by Sophie Jordan

Firelight (Firelight #1)
by Sophie Jordan

A hidden truth.
Mortal enemies.
Doomed love.
With her rare ability to breathe fire, Jacinda is special even among the draki--the descendants of dragons who can shift between human and dragon forms. But when Jacinda's rebelliousness forces her family to flee into the human world, she struggles to adapt, even as her draki spirit fades. The one thing that revives it is the gorgeous, elusive Will, whose family hunts her kind. Jacinda can't resist getting closer to him, even though she knows she's risking not only her life but the draki's most closely guarded secret.
Mythical powers and breathtaking romance ignite in this story of a girl who defies all expectations and whose love crosses an ancient divide.
I was really disappointed in this book. I was really excited to read Firelight, because it was the first book about dragons I've read. And in the first few pages it was looking very promising. But, oh boy, did that change fast.

In the beginning Jacinda and her friend Azure go off and transform into dragons and fly over lakes and mountains. I was loving it so far. I thought this was going to be really amazing. I was liking Jacinda and Azure. But as they were flying they start getting attacked. This is where the love interest is "introduced". Which is where it all started going wrong for me.

People always complain about insta-love, including myself. But after reading this book I realized there are worst things than that. Like, i-just-heard-your-voice-now-im-in-love type of insta-love. That's right, she heard his voice and described it as "deep and calm and velvet smooth". She never meet him before, never seen him, but she heard his voice and she couldn't stop thinking about him. This happens in the very beginning of Firelight, normal the way the "romance", if you an call it that, starts out is how it is through the entire book, not always, but sometimes. And the way this incredibly cheesy romance starts, is how it stays.

The romance was not the only thing I didn't like about it. Every one of the characters in this book annoyed me to no end.

Jacinda was always complaining. Her sister was selfish, always saying "what about me?" blah. He mom was just eh. The love interest, Will, the one with the "deep and calm and velvet smooth" voice, He wasn't awful he just didn't come across as anything to me. I didn't feel anything towards him. When he wasn't in a scene I didn't think about him.

Overall, I give myself two pats on the back for even finishing Firelight. If it wasn't boring me, I was annoyed. I didn't like any of the characters, the story line, the writing, and don't get me started on the romance. I most likely won't continue reading this series. I really do wish I liked Firelight more than I did, because, I mean dragons.

Oh it's too bad you didn't like it. I actually liked the trilogy. THe world and mythology was unique and I was fine with the characters.

Try Seraphina by Rachel Hartman for more dragons:)

I've heard that it's going to be made into a movie. I have to read this book before that.

I read it and had the same problems. The next book didn't seem like a vast improvement either. Thanks for the review and explaining it better than I could have.

I enjoyed Firelight when I read it back when it came out. I didn't enjoy the sequel Vanish. If I were to reread Firelight I would probably say the say things that you say now having known what would've happened.

I read this, finished it, and decided that I didn't think I would even try to read the next 2. Not because the story stunk. the story in itself wasn't all that awful. It was the characters that got me. Especially whiny Jacinda, and her awful sister. It was disappointing. I love dragons. After reading Deborah Cooke's Dragon Diaries series, I decided dragons were the best thing ever. If you want dragons, PLUS an amazing story, I recommend you check it out. Totally worth it.

I've had this book in my list of books I wanted to read for years, pretty much since it was published, and I am so glad I found the kindle version on sale and took the time to read it! I loved this book, the teenage angst and the supernatural edge. Can't wait for the next one!
